William George Moffett, son of Henry C Moffett and Rachel Shires was born on 19 Oct 1847 in Exchange, Derry Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. Lying about his age, he enlisted on 6 Oct 1862 in Williamsport, PA, a few days shy of his 15th birthday and was discharged 6 Oct 1865. He served in Company G., 1st Battalion, 14th Regiment of the United States Infantry and fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and the Battle of North Anna in Virginia.
