OBITUARIES:
Arner, Carl Joseph. Allentown, PA. June 11, 2022. Carl Joseph Arner, 85, of Allentown, PA, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at home surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Minerva (Messerschmidt) Arner, with whom he spent almost 63 years of marriage. Born in New Ringgold, PA, he was the son of the late Robert and Mae (Zimmerman) Arner.
He was a graduate of Tamaqua High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Kutztown College and a Master’s Degree in School Counseling form Bucknell University in 1960. He also participated in additional courses at Penn State University.
Carl was the Upper Perkiomen Middle School Guidance Counselor for 31 years before retiring in 1991. He was an active and faithful member of Huff’s Union Church where he was in charge of the Last Suppers and volunteered his time with many other church activities.
Carl was a true Dutchman at heart and was proud of his Dutch heritage, often joking “You’re not much, if you’re not Dutch”. He wrote the Pennsylvania Dutch Column for the Town & Country for 33 years and also wrote Pennsylvania Dutch plays. He was the founding member of the Huffakarrich Fersommling, a member of the Berks County Fersommling and a member of the Grundsow Lodge #7.
He was a pillar of the community and dedicated his life and time to helping others before himself. He made friends wherever he went, and will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three sons, Michael Arner and wife, Karen of Chapel Hill, NC, David Arner and wife, Colleen of East Greenville, PA and Steven Arner and wife, Valerie of East Greenville, PA. He also had several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a brother, Robert Arner.
Arnold, Andrea Elizabeth. Tamaqua, PA, Times News. Andrea Elizabeth Arnold, wife of Kris D. Wertman of Port Clinton, died 1 October 2022 in Reading, PA. Surviving are her husband and her son Shawn Cipa of Burgettstown, stepchildren Kyle wertmanof Murrysville, Kris Korey Wertman of Seminole, FL, and Karly Dukich (nee Wertman) of Mount Lebanon.
Dannecker, Harvey. Allentown, PA - Morning Call. 2 January 2022. Mr. Dannecker (age 92) was the husband of Octavia (nee Young) to whom he was married for 66 years. He was the son of Howard C. and Ruth B. (nee Wertman) Dannecker. Obituary mentions daughter Michele Kay Dannecker and brother Herbert Dannecker.
Faust, Larry R. Tamaqua, PA - Times News 19 Apr 2023. Larry R. Faust, age 73, died 15 Apr 2023 in Andreas, PA. He was the son of Ethelbert and Mildred (Steigerwalt) Faust. Mantz, Velma L. Born 22 Sept, 1932, in Schuylkill Co., PA., Velma L. Mantz of Tamaqua, PA died 14 Sept 2022 in Coaldale, PA. The daughter of Lewis A. and Mabel A. (nee Wertman) Mantz, she was the last surviving member of her family. Predeceasing her were brother Kermit and sisters Fern Mantz, Eleanor Hayes, Eileen Lutz, and Wilda Umphrey.
Martinez, Alfonso "Al". Tamaqua, PA - Times News. 2 January 2022. Mr. Martinez was born March 17, 1947 in Corozal, Puerto Rico to Alfonso and Demetria (nee Rivera) Martinez. Sisters mentioned were: Irma Alvarez, Carmen Marrero, and Gloria Hoffman. Brothers were Jose "Pepito" Martinez, Miguel A. Martinez, Jose L. "Bibi" Martinez, and Juan A. "Tony" Martinez. Robertshaw, Clyde W. Tamaqua, PA - Times News. A resident of Owl Creek, Tamaqua, Clyde died 27 Jan 2023 in Bethlehem at the age of 56. The son of Clyde M. and Gloria M. (nee Snyder) Robertshaw, he is survived by a brother David J. Robertshaw, niece Heather Nester, and nephew Paul Nester.
Sell, Roma I. Allentown, PA - Morning Call. 15 Oct 2022. The wife of Arthur C. Sell, Roma was the daughter of Russel and Laura (Wertman) Peters, was born in Fogelsville, PA 87 years ago and died 13 Oct 2022 in New Tripoli, PA. Mentioned are husband Arthur C., children Diane L. Palik, Gary J., Karen L. Reis and Jeffrey S as well as 8 grandchildren. Family included brother Donald and sisters Arlene Moyer and Jean Kemp.
Steigerwalt, Donald R. Tamaqua, PA - Times News. 15 April 2023. A resident of Lehighton, Donald R. Steigerwalt, 87, died in Palmerton on 9 April 2023. The husband of the late Jean L. (nee Wehr), he was born in Andreas on 20 Dec. 1935 to Peter and Grace (nee Andreas) Steigerwalt. The obituary contains a list of surviving family.
Wertman, Burnell T. Jr. Allentown, PA - Morning Call. 25 March 2023. Burnell T. "Spundy/Nellie" Wertman Jr., age 69, of Slatington died at Cedar Crest, PA. The son of Bernell T. and Joan E. (nee Horwath) Wertman, he served in the US Army and later worked as a furnace operator and at the Twin Lakes Golf Club.
